How Pure EPA fish
oil works?
Your brain is 60% fat ( Watch the video
on pregnancy ).
So to keep your mind healthy, your diet must contain Omega-3 EPA/DHA
essential fatty acids which your brain and body can only get from fish.
Omega-3 fatty acids make up an enormous 10% of
the average human brain. So you won’t be surprised to hear that omega-3
oil, obtained from fish, has been shown to be particularly effective in
keeping your mind healthy.
Fish oil is no
miracle cure, rather it feeds your body essential nutrients that it needs.
It helps your system deal with any imbalances you may have, so it
radically improves your overall health (mental and physical).
If you have already tried fish oil and have been disappointed by the results,
it’s very likely that you were taking standard fish oil, rather
than the clinical grade oil that was actually used in the scientific
research.
Fish oil of this clinical strength cannot
be found in health food stores or pharmacies.
Naturecol now provides its Ultra
Pure EPA/DHA and soon to come Ultra Pure DHA/EPA that is needed to provide
therapeutic benefits.
Naturecol molecularly distills it's fish oil “3” times which gives it a water clear pure grade that has not been seen before.
How much do I
need to take?
Articles and other
worldwide media sources have repeatedly shown that the recommended daily
dose of a high grade Omega-3 EPA is 1 gram
or 1000mgs EPA fish oil, daily
(in the strength of Naturecol’s Omega-3 EPA/DHA) in order to get
clinical benefits.

Where does EPA
come from?
What is EPA?
EPA is short for (eicosapentaenoic acid).
It is a nutrient extracted from omega-3 fatty acids, which are the good
fats found in oily fish such as sardines, salmon and mackerel.
Essential to life and
good health, omega-3 EPA, is believed to be of particular importance for
eye and brain function.
How does EPA
work?
One area of study
shows that low levels of EPA are associated with a slowing of brain
activity, owing to a hardening of the phospholipid layers, which slow cell
signaling. This decreased communication between brain cells can lead to
symptoms of depression and other brain imbalances.
Taking EPA can
reverse this harmful process by increasing the amount of phospholipids in
brain-cell membranes. This has a positive effect on neurotransmitters and
enhances electrical messaging in the brain.
Can’t I just
eat fish?
Taking a daily dose
of Naturecol’s Omega-3 EPA can be more reliable than having to make sure
you regularly eat the right amount of the right kind of fish.
Many types of fish
now contain traces of toxic metals such as mercury, lead and even arsenic.
Many “standard” fish oils do too. Naturecol’s
purification process, Puremax, removes these toxins from the fish oil,
making it an ideal safe way to get your daily dose of these valuable
nutrients.
Heart Health
It's now estimated that individuals with a higher
dietary intake of EPA and DHA reduce their risk of heart disease by
roughly 47% compared to those individuals who do not eat fish.
The essential fatty acids in fish oil, known as omega-3s
(mainly EPA and DHA), not only are important for a healthy heart and
the cardiovascular system, but play a critical role in the health of
your skin, joints, cell membrane structure, nervous system, fight
depression and make kids smarter.
When researchers measured the level of the omega-3 fatty
acids EPA and DHA within red blood cells, they found that they had
discovered one of the most significant predictors of heart disease called
the omega-3 index.
This index was a better predictor of coronary heart
disease than other established markers such as total, LDL, or HDL
cholesterol; C-reactive protein; and homocystiene. A low omega-3 index
score resulted in the least protection and the greatest score resulted in
the most protection. The omega-3 index for those individuals with the
greatest protection consumed the equivalent of 1,000 mg of EPA and DHA a
day. Most experts recommend a daily dosage of 1,000 mg of EPA and DHA
combined. Higher doses may be required for therapeutic applications.
Arthritis
is characterized by symptoms which include inflammation, painful joints
and stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic auto-immune disease
that is extremely painful and can lead to severe disability.
Osteoarthritis can be described as wear and tear of the joints with a
resulting loss of cartilage.
Numerous studies have
found that fish oil can improve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis by
significantly reducing inflammation and in some cases, even lessen the
need for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Similarly with
osteoarthritis, studies have found that fish oil suppresses the action of
cartilage destroying enzymes.
Fish oil contains the
essential Omega 3 fatty acids that are found in oily fish such as Salmon,
Tuna, Sardines and Mackerel. They are essential in that the body cannot
produce them itself. We can only source them from our diet. Most of
us simply do not get enough Omega 3 fatty acids.
Traditionally, man
ate a diet that was rich in omega-3s but now, our diet is low in omega-3s.
There is a substantial amount of research indicating that it is this
imbalance of Omega 3's in our diet that are mainly responsible for the
higher incidence of inflammatory diseases, cancers and allergies that we
see today.
The Omega 6 fatty
acids are also essential, but are easy to obtain, they can be found in
cooking oils, such as corn oil and sunflower oil, and in processed foods
and convenience foods. They promote inflammation in the body and help the
blood to clot. The Omega 3's do exactly the opposite; they have
anti-inflammatory properties and help to thin the blood.
Clinical trials have
reported that after taking fish oil for 3 months, patients found that
their symptoms of arthritis improved, with less inflammation, pain and
stiffness. Furthermore, those taking fish oil for longer than 3
months found they had an increase in grip strength.
As there is some
evidence that Rheumatoid Arthritis is the result of oxidative stress on
the body, and fish oil is an antioxidant, it is particularly important to
choose a high quality fish oil containing a powerful antioxidant such as
vitamin E.
Pregnancy
If you want to ensure
that you and your child are healthy and happy during and after pregnancy,
consistent supplementation with omega-3 can help. A recent
controversy has been widely reported over whether or not it is safe for
women to eat fish during pregnancy. A group of scientists have
released a study showing that the benefits to moms and babies taking
omega-3s found in fish far outweigh the risks associated with ingesting
the mercury and other contaminants in fish. Even still you want to be sure
to take no chances with your baby. Pregnant
women can get all of the benefits of omega-3 from fish, without taking any
risks. With
Naturecol’s high purity Omega-3 EPA/DHA you can be sure that there are
no toxins to worry about. Our Omega-3 has been distilled three times to
produce the purest form of water clear, pure Omega-3’s that you can buy.
Omega-3
is Dr. Recommended
I strongly advise those pregnant and nursing women who choose
not to eat fish to be certain to take supplementary [omega-3] DHA. Fatty
fish are high in DHA, which is good, but they are often high in toxic
metals and environmental contaminants that are particularly damaging to
babies.

- Thomas
Bartram, Author of Bartram’s
Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine
“[Omega-3] DHA plays a particularly crucial role in the brain
development of infants and children. DHA accumulates in the fetal
brain late in pregnancy, and continues to accumulate during an infant's
first few months of life. Researchers have determined that [omega-3]
fatty acids affect intelligence in infancy and perhaps later in life.”
- Dr.
Julian Whitaker, Author of The Memory Solution
“Omega-3 fatty acids
are essential for the normal development of the unborn baby's brain,
especially during the final three months of gestation when the size of its
brain increases threefold. If the mother fails to get enough of these
nutrients in her diet, the fetus will pirate what she has stored in her
tissues—including her brain. Lab tests show that new mothers have
half the normal blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Women who
breast-feed their babies have even lower levels of DHA because they are
continuing to supply
the baby's need for omega-3 fatty acids. If a woman does not
replenish her store of these essential elements following the birth of a
child, she will have lower and lower levels with each additional child.
Some people suggest this is why firstborn children score higher on
intelligence tests. Until now, people have attributed the well documented
mental superiority of firstborn children to the fact they spend more one
on one time with a parent. It is now being suggested that their
greater cognitive abilities may also be due to a more generous supply of
maternal DHA."
Nature's Anti-depressant:
EPA is part of the Omega-3 chain of ecosanoids and is most commonly
found in fatty fish such as fresh salmon, mackerel, and sardines. Over the
years the diet patterns of most people in the west has shifted
dramatically to include far more hydrogenated oils and Trans fats
(bad fats). This is largely due to the increased consumption of fast food.
Even people who think they eat a healthy diet consume way too much omega 6
and not enough omega 3.
Researchers have recently found that a diet high in Trans
fats could affect the mood stabilizing hormones within the brain, this is
thought to be due to the saturated fats slowing down the messaging system
within the brain, should this happen then the onset of depression could
occur.
As well as EPA being very good for helping to balance mood it
has other well documented effects:
· Blood thinning properties*
· Decrease
risk of heart attack*
· lowers
blood pressure*
There is also some limited scientific evidence to show that
high grade EPA has helped people suffering from:-
· Bipolar
disorder*
· Obsessive
compulsive disorder*
· Schizophrenia*
· ADHD*
· ADD*
Although more research needs to be done in these areas, the
current evidence looks very promising.
Since
Dr Malcolm Peet, a consultant psychiatrist at Sheffield swallow court
hospital released his findings about the effects of Ethyl EPA and its
effects on people suffering from depression and low moods, many other
studies have been performed using Ethyl EPA to help treat depression and
related disorders. The vast majority of the studies that have been
performed consistently confirmed that Ethyl EPA, a natural substance found
in omega 3 fish oil, helps relieve depression and low moods.
Relatively
high doses of EPA appear to be required to achieve significant benefits in
neurodevelopment disorders. Naturecol's omega-3, as a high purity, high
potency EPA concentrate, offers a child-friendly solution for effective
supplementation. It allows effective doses to be given in smaller, moor
child-friendly capsules.
DHA/EPA and Brain Development
A growing number of studies in human infants is showing a strong
correlation between the intake of omega-3 oils, especially DHA, and
cognitive function, visual acuity, and overall brain development. human
infant brain development undergoes its most rapid and complex growth
during the last trimester of pregnancy and the first two years after
birth. This means that during this period the child’s neurological
development is highly dependent on its dietary intake of essential
nutrients, especially omega-3 oils.
Because the fetal and infant brain is unable to convert alpha-linolenic
oil (an omega-3 oil) into DHA, the baby depends on its mother for
its supply. Lipids make up 50 to 60% of the structure of the brain, with
DHA making up 30% of the brain and 50% of the retina’s structure.
However, since the baby depends on the mother for its supply of DHA,
omega-3 deficiencies can lead to deficiency in the infant brain with each
successive birth. Studies have shown that brain DHA deficiency is limited
to about 30% with the first generation, but by the third generation, brain
DHA levels can fall by as much as 85%.
The average DHA and EPA intake combined in the
USA
is about 100-200 mgs/day, far below the 650 mgs of DHA and 1000 mgs EPA
that experts recommend for healthy individuals. Furthermore, it has been
shown that after birth, DHA levels fall between the ages of 6 and 12
months mostly due to low DHA content in most baby foods and formulas,
which can have a profound effect on postnatal brain development. A study
that measured the impact of DHA on visual development in 6 month old
infants found that retinal and visual cortex maturation was greatly
improved in infants receiving DHA versus control infants who were
deficient in DHA.
In developing babies, higher levels of DHA levels are needed for the
growth of neuronal cells and other brain structures. The composition of
the membranes of neural cells is under constant reconstruction, and can
change drastically with changes in diet. It has been shown that while
other fatty acids plateau at birth, DHA levels actually double, mainly
during periods of intense nerve cell development, that is, during intense
brain growth. Overwhelming evidence for the benefits of DHA comes
from a recent review of some 50 studies, which concluded that higher DHA
in babies’ diets translates into better brain function, especially for
cognitive and visual function. Further evidence that DHA may promote
healthy nervous system development comes from a recent study in which
researchers divided normal, healthy infants into two groups. One group was
bottle fed with a DHA formula and the other group bottle fed with a
formula containing no DHA. Using assessments of visual, auditory, and
sensory perception, they found definite abnormalities in all three tests
in the bottle fed babies at one year of age.
A
devastating consequence of low DHA status is its impact on the development
of neurological abnormalities. In another study, researchers measured DHA,
essential fatty acids, trans fatty acids, and arachidonic acid levels in
the umbilical artery and vein of infants. They found that infants with
neurological abnormalities at birth had significantly lower levels of
arachidonic acid and DHA and higher trans fatty acid levels. In contrast,
infants with higher arachidonic acid, DHA, and essential fatty acid levels
had more normal neurological function. In a further test of cognitive
development in infancy, researchers found that maternal and fetal DHA
levels measured at birth correlated with attention and distractibility at
12 and 18 months, with those having higher DHA levels better than those
with low levels.
DHA
and the Adult Brain
While DHA is essential for the proper development of the infant brain, it
also plays a vital role in the ongoing structure and function of the adult
brain. It is a component of several important phospholipids in the brain,
with the highest levels of DHA being found in phosphatidylethanolamine
(PE) and phosphatidyl-serine (PS). Lower levels exist in
phosphatidyl-cholines (PC). Structurally, DHA comprises 22 carbons and six
double bonds, making it the most unsaturated fatty acid in cell membranes
and an important ingredient in increasing the fluidity of cell membranes.
Changing the fluidity of cell membranes alters their physical properties,
such as permeability and protein activity. This change can drastically
alter cell signaling and plays a major role in increasing membrane
permeability of cancer cells, making them more susceptible to immunologic
and chemothera-peutic killing. EPA, however, has much less effect on
membrane fluidity than DHA.
It has also been shown that a greater incorporation of DHA into cell
membranes results in dramatically less susceptibility to lipid
peroxidation and oxidative stress in cells, especially neurons.
Although many view the brain as a stable structure that changes little
after adolescence, it is in fact always in a state of flux, not only by
forming millions of new nerve connections, but also by replacing and
altering its biochemical makeup, especially membrane lipids. Connected
with this constant turnover of brain lipids are the phospholipase enzymes,
which can release arachidonic acid and DHA from the cell membrane. Dietary
changes can therefore drastically alter brain lipids, which can
significantly alter brain function, even worsening neuropsychiatric
disorders.
Furthermore, there is evidence that as we age, the distribution of DHA in
the brain changes. For example, during infancy the highest levels are
found in the striatum (associated with motor control) and are lower in the
hypothalamus (linking the nervous and endocrine systems) and hippocampus
(associated with memory). In adults, the highest levels are in the cortex
(essential to cognition) and lowest in the medulla (crucial for autonomic
function). With aging, the highest levels are in the cortex and cerebellum
(involved in motor control). An example of this regional specificity was
seen in a recent study when scientists restored dietary DHA to rats that
had been deprived of the nutrient. They found that all areas of brain DHA
were restored after 12 weeks, except for the medulla, which recovered only
62% of its DHA.41 These findings therefore provide plentiful evidence that
consuming enough DHA may be essential for upkeep of the adult brain.
Fish
oil nutrition and babies:
Fish oil contains two important Omega-3 fatty acids called EPA and DHA.
EPA and DHA are needed for brain development. They occur together in
nature and human cells, and should be taken in this natural tandem form.
DHA
(docosahexaenoic acid) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid found in deep-sea
cold water fish. DHA is an essential nutrient for proper brain, nervous
system, and visual function and must be obtained through the diet. A
healthy balance of DHA is essential to properly care for the brain
throughout life, particularly during the early stages of development.
A
high concentration of DHA can be found in mother's breast milk. However,
the level is directly related to the amount of Omega-3 fatty acids that
are consumed in the mother's diet. Due to refined foods and trendy diets,
many individuals have reduced their intake of the dietary sources of
Omega-3 fatty acids, contributing to lower levels of DHA in breast milk.
The impact of low DHA intake on neurological function of adults and
children is the subject of ongoing clinical investigations.
Naturecol’s
Omeaga-3 fatty acids are pharmaceutical grade, molecularly distilled, and
third party tested to document the absence of all environmental pollutants
(No PCBs, dioxins, pesticides or heavy metals).

How Does
EPA Work?
While the benefits of high grade EPA have been well documented, the
scientific community still don't know exactly how EPA works on the brain,
one theory released by Dr Basant Puri is that it eases the passage of the
signals over the tiny gaps in the brain called synapses. Another theory
was that high Grade EPA actually worked similar to lithium and had
anti depressant properties of its own.
Until recently it was widely accepted in the medical community that once a
human reached maturity that the adult brain could not grow anymore, in a
recent paper just released by Dr Puri his findings show other wise. Dr
Puri scanned a 21 year patient before treating him with high grade Pure
EPA, after the course of treatment he rescanned the young man only to find
that the gray matter of the brain had increased in size.
Learning
and Concentration
Neurodevelopment
disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),
developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and dyslexia show a high degree
of clinical overlap. All are associated with essential fatty acid (EFA)
deficiencies or imbalances.
The supplementation
effect of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids such as ultra pure
omega-3 EPA:DHA has been evaluated on children with diagnosed DCD,
many of whom had ADHD-related symptoms, behavior and learning
difficulties. In these double blind clinical trials, the active treatment
was a daily dose of 558mg EPA and 174mg DHA . An olive oil supplement was
the placebo. Within just 3 months, the active treatment group made highly
significant improvements in nearly all behavioral scales, including the
three diagnostic features of ADHD: inattention, hyperactivity and
impulsivity. This group also saw significant improvements in reading,
spelling and short-term memory, compared to the placebo group.
Relatively high doses
of EPA appear to be required to achieve significant benefits in
neurodevelopment disorders. Naturecol's omega-3, as a high purity, high
potency EPA concentrate, offers a child-friendly solution for effective
supplementation. It allows effective doses to be given in smaller, moor
child-friendly capsules.
Conclusion
The large majority of scientific trails using high grade Omega 3 Ethyl EPA
point towards this natural oil being very beneficial for many conditions.
The argument about the DHA rages on and probably will until some solid
scientific evidence is presented to us . In the mean time a product with a
high EPA to DHA ratio is considered more beneficial by leading doctors.
